$5 Gold Half Eagle Indian.  The half eagle was produced for circulation in the United States from 1795 to 1929 and in modern times as a commemorative and bullion coin since 1986. Production was authorized by Congress in the Act of 1792 and has the prestige of being the first gold coin minted by the United States. The year 1908 brought a fifth design change for the five dollar gold coin. President Teddy Roosevelt commissioned famed sculptor, Augustus Saint Gaudens to redesign those five denominations which would not require a congressional act; the $20, $10, $5, and $2.5 gold along with the one cent coin. Sadly, Saint Gaudens died before completing his designs for the $5, $2.5 and one cent coins. In his place, Bela Lyon Pratt, a famous Boston sculptor, was chosen to complete the redesign of the smaller denomination coins. The end result was the $5 Indian head coin with its unique incused design. Production of the Indian head five was suspended during World War I and resumed only in 1929 which was also the final date of issue.
