U.S. Modern Commemorative Coins

Commemorative coins have been around since ancient times and used to record and honor important events. In ancient times, commemorative coins were a tool to pass along current happenings. In modern times, these coins are known for their historical features which is what really attracts the collector. Many nations produce modern commemoratives, however, few rival the United States in the quality and quantity of these treasures. Production of commemorative coins in the United States requires the consideration of two different Congressional committees; the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs and the Committee on Banking and Financial Services of the House. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee also guides Congress in authorizing commemorative coins. Usually, the issuing of these special coins commemorates significant historical birthdays or anniversaries or used to help finance monuments or celebrations that commemorate historical persons, places or things.
